Review: Moeraes Fate -- Making of the New Me
Category: Music
Every so often a band comes along that goes beyond copying what everyone else is doing or copying what is popular. Bands like Led Zeppelin, Rush, and Tea Party come to mind. Like any band, they followed in the footsteps of those who came before, but they took the music somewhere new and they had something to say both musically and lyrically.

On New Years Eve 2009/2010 I happened to tune my TV in to the celebrations from Niagara Falls. The two headlining bands, Styx and Glass Tiger, were there, resting on their laurels, playing their old favourite pop tunes to pump up the crowd. But another band was there too. They had won a spot on the stage a few weeks prior. From the first note to the last beat I was blown away. Trouble is, I had no idea who they were! I had missed their introduction! As soon as their set was over I abandoned the party and ran to the computer to find out who these awesome young musicians were. They were new, and different, and they had something to say.

The band was Moeraes Fate--a fantastic progressive rock/hard rock/metal power trio from the Toronto area. They have such a unique sound and approach to their music. At this early stage in a career you would expect a young band to sound like the flavour of the month. But they don't, they sound like no one else.

Singer Katee Lee has a voice that is reminicent of Maria Del Mar from National Velvet, but also strongly suggests Tori Amos in her harder moments. However, she sings in her own style with power and conviction. On top of her vocal talents, she is a powerful bass player. Not content with thumping out the rhythm, Katee plays flourishes, fills, runs, and even melodic lines that one would only expect from a more experienced player. Lee is showing that she has the potential to become a bass goddess like that other famous Canadian power trio bass player named Lee.

There is a buzz building around drummer Kayla Faye. She is one of those drummers who brings the house down and steals the show from her bandmates. She thunders and roars through complex rhythms and patterns. She is obviously not content to be just a time keeper. Her drumming tells a story. She gives each song a unique feel. Most drummers these days just play the same few patterns from song to song. Not Faye. Her drumming is integral to the song.

As if two talented players is not enough for one band, Moeraes Fate has a secret weapon, Ali Stead. She is an incredibly adept and versatile player. In the power trio model, the guitarist has to be able to fill out the soundscape with compelling rhythms as well as screaming lead lines. Stead does this in spades. She effortlessly slips back and forth between rocking rhythm and burning leads. She also plays fantastic riffs that remind me of two of the most gifted rock guitarists of all time, Robert Fripp and Jimmy Page--talk about contrasts. Stead plays with passion and precision. She is one of those people that was born to play guitar. Her style, while nodding to the past, is both new and fresh.

Moeraes Fate have a great EP out that showcases some of their stage material and talents. The five song EP is called "Making of the New Me", after one of their stage favourites. The EP also contains a bonus track, a lovely acoustic cover of 80's hit "Man in the Mirror".

Most girls under the age of 18 are going to volleyball practice, prepping for prom and wondering what they're going to be when they grow up. As for the girls in Canadian rock group, Moeraes Fate, that's not exactly the case.
As the winners of the YouDiscover contest, guitarist Ali Stead, drummer Kayla Faye, and bassist/vocalist Katee Lee found themselves in front of 30,000 screaming fans and on live television playing at the Niagara Falls New Years Eve party opening for Glass Tiger and Styx.
They showcased a few tunes from their original catalog but also took the time to pay tribute to the late Michael Jackson with their rendition of, "Man in the Mirror."
Following the Niagara Falls gig, they played their next landmark gig of their careers, the Hard Rock Cafe in Toronto.
It's clear that such a young band, with hard work, dedication and natural talent, can make their dreams a reality.
Look for the girls to cross the boarder into the U.S. this year as their momentum continues to grow in support of their latest EP, "Making of the New Me."

I've been following the fortunes of this band since they sent me a friend request (as "Dame" ) on MySpace about two years ago. They were amazing then, but the hard work and dedication they've put into improving their songwriting, musical skills and stage performance is just staggering. Their metamorphosis into "Moeraes Fate" is the first step in their journey into the international Rock Music scene, to take up their rightful mantle as the "Future of Rock". It's only a matter of time. January 14, 5:33 PM

I'm really disappointed to say I have yet to be able to catch the girls live~but I love their music. I know for a fact that the talent they have matches their personalities. I believe that Ellen needs to invite them to play on her show. Awesome to see Katee, Ali, and Kayla winning fans over everywhere they go! I can't wait to have the opportunity to see them in person :) January 14, 5:26 PM
David says:
Someone invited me to see this concert with three little girls. OK, so I went to accomodate a friend. Expecting something of a high school band performance I had to give my head a shake and it was minutes before I realized my jaw was on the table. Yes great songs on the Ep but seeing them LIVE. One word can describe: MIND BLOWING. I also got the opportunity to meet them at their merch table after the show. They are a class act. Sweet girls indeed, giggling and blushing BUT furocious lionesses onstage ready to chew you up and take you somewhere the music scene hasnt seen since the introduction of RUSH and has been waiting for what seems like forever. I highly recommend getting out to a show asap before they start filling stadiums and selliong tickets out in record time. And I was amazed to see their fan base was a large variety of ages. Nothing like seeing a 40 year old man head banging in front of the stage. Makes one wonder is it head banginging or hypnoptic worship. A++ January 14, 7:33 AM

Hard Rocking with Moeraes Fate

By Amanda Walton January 24, 2010

Which Rock from the Sun did Moeraes Fate come from because it sure couldn’t be the planet of the Third Rock! That’s the first thought that raced through me the first time I was blown away seeing and hearing their performance in Niagara Falls on New Years Eve.
Memorizing, unique, powerful are a few words that come to mind but addicting is one you will feel immediately as the fans old and new felt that came to see Moeraes Fate play at the Hard Rock Café Toronto Friday January 8/10 in the semi-finals of 4 the Rekord competition for a chance to win $10,000.
Second band on stage the scattered crowd and fans immediately took front and centre gathering around the stage to get as close as possible to what was going to be without a doubt another awesome performance and with no surprise rocked the Hard Rock as if they were seasoned professionals touring one of their concerts.
Meeting the three girls after the performance was the highlight of my night, and as hard rock as these girls are, they are amazing ladies with awesome personalities filled with smiles and laughter.
Moeraes Fate2
I’m happy to pass along Moeraes Fate won the semi-finals and have moved onto the finals at a place and date TBA (to be announced). We will for sure be there to support them and another chance to watch them live up close and personal along with letting you all know the confirmed date and time.
It’s been a long time since I’ve ventured out to listen to a live band or even a concert so for me to follow around a group they have to be pretty amazing and that word doesn’t do these three ladies justice. Kicking back to their tunes it’s hard not to be astonished at the clarity of their sound and style, but to watch them live on stage with a performance that comes so naturally to all three is a chance you just don’t want to miss. Many in the industry are confident these girls will go all the way and that day of turning into reality as it’s at the beginning stages, very few fans will get this close again. They are that awesome!
A unique signature band is what I view them, although a sound contemporary to Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Rush, Pearl Jam and others these girls are a breath of the new millennium air slipping in the combined sounds power and performance of some of the great legends in music mixed in with their own unique style that appeals to a wide age range of fan base.
I found it difficult on which member to focus my attention on as all three exhibit strength in their area of play as Kayla Faye exercises her ability that can keep up and even surpass her peers in the industry as a powerful drummer/percussionist.
MF
Vocalist and bass player Katee Lee is quickly gaining fame for her natural strong voice with the added training of the late Haydain Neale, a 2 time Juno award winner in 2001 and 2007, Canadian Urban Music Award winner for songwriter of the year in 2004 and SOCAN award for R&B song of the year in 2005 along with Katee’s bass playing as Kenny Colgate of The Fallout Entertainment Group/Romulus X Records compared to his all time favourite bass player Getty Lee of Rush.
Katee and Ali
The newest band member guitarist/keyboardist Ali Stead plays as though she was born with her guitar in her hands, a natural stage performer, and her great sense of style gave new reach to the band formally known as Dame.
Their newly released EP (and one I blast on my stereo) “The Making of the New Me” was recorded by Hamilton based Imagefm/Platinum Entertainment owned by Mark Brewer who produced and co-produced with the band, Moeraes Fate has yet to sign with anyone at this time said Manager Jacquie Lee who was kind enough to answer a few questions I had on these new rising stars.
Katee Lee 3
When speaking with Ali Stead’s mother MJ and co-manager who I had the pleasure to meet with and talk to in person at the Hard Rock Café, I inquired about their busy schedule because of the young age and the continued growing recognition of three girls who write their own music, play benefits, tour, give interviews and continue in band competition and most importantly at this time their schooling. MJ replied Ali is expected to maintain at least an 85 percent average in which she does and Jacquie Lee also told me all the girls are expected to maintain good grades but if they do sway they are given the extra time to improve but never rehearse less then once a week.
To many young talent are not encouraged to continue their schooling at this pace and end up taking to the limelight to quickly only to not gain the success they were shooting for with nothing to fall back on Kenny Colgate told Nabweekly during a lengthy conversation last week as we shared our blown away appreciation of talent and dedicated fan followers of Moeraes Fate. The fact these girls have Management that sticks by education will give these girls a greater chance of success in their future of the direction they are headed.
Me!

Me!

With an agenda this packed, discipline is something that seems to come just as naturally to Moeraes Fate as does their tremendous amount of talent you have to watch and listen to believe.

Happy New Year!!!
I hope everyone had an awesome 2009 holiday season and brought some good cheer into the New Year with them. Our holidays rocked ending with New Year’s Eve and rising stars of Girls Gone Wild in the Progressive/Alternative/Rock scene Nabweekly is psyched to feature in our 2010 New Year Post.
Our holiday season turned out to be one of the best with many lessons learned and great people we met to end off our 2009 to bring us into a very optimistic 2010. My husband with our 12 year old daughter in tow spent his time this season working/volunteering at one of the Salvation Army Kettles at Wal-Mart here in Fort Erie and was surprised by the generosity of so many people who passed through the region Unfortunately, not all the kettles in the Fort Erie area did as well with donations this year but in a hard hit economic community for 2008/09 any donation was greatly appreciated.
We would like to take this time to thank all the people out there who contributed to the Salvation Army Kettles still under the cloud of a downed economy, with that kind of generosity it helped many families who struggle in the holiday season the most if anything see a smile on their children’s face with a good meal and gifts under the tree. There truly is a Santa Claus and he comes in the spirit of many people every year.
Adding to the kindness of giving Wal-Mart Canada donated $100,000 to help the Salvation Army from coast to coast to coast that had a harder time raising the funding they needed mainly North Vancouver, Calgary, Winnipeg, Halifax/Dartmouth.
“In 2007, Walmart Canada stores, which serve more than one million Canadians daily, became the single largest fundraising venue for The Salvation Army’s Christmas Kettle Campaign. To date, Walmart Canada and its customers have raised and donated more than $2.7 million to The Salvation Army as well as supported many in-store Angel Tree and Adopt-a-Family programs by collecting food, clothing, and toys for families in need. ” Salvation Army Canada
Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Salvation Army in Little Rock, Arkansas as one of their beloved members Maj. Phillip Wise, only 40 years old gunned down Christmas Eve as his three children stood from behind while outside the community center of the Salvation Army detachment, picking up his wife at the centre also a Major in the department.
Two armed men approached Maj. Wise, demanded money then shot him. Maj. Wise and his wife were the adoptive parents of three children 4, 6 and 8 all siblings who were from an abusive home.
Maj. Wise also ran a food pantry, youth programs and church services in a low-come neighborhood troubled by gangs and drugs.
The continued mission of Major Phillip Wise and The Salvation Army did not die with him but enlightened our knowledge of how many spirits a man like this touches that will double overtime by paying it forward.
Major Wise was also a great lover of music playing the tuba and using his love of music to help others, Maj. Harvey Johnson described Wise’s message “He encouraged kids in music as an alternative to the life they were living,”
We also remember with great respect our fallen soldiers and those who have past, present and future served in our arm forces who wear the uniform for the rest of us to have hopes and dreams to bring into a new year to fulfill. We also thank Glass Tiger as one of the Niagara New Year’s Festival headliners for the tribute on stage dedicated to our men and women in the military and for those who put their lives at risk to get the important stories out to the rest of the world.
Our year in the Niagara Region has been very enlightening and encouraging as the year passed, we did a lot of first times since moving here and spending New Year’s Eve in the heart of Niagara Falls was one of them.

Reflection of the end of 2009, anticipation for 2010

30,000 people were expected downtown and as we arrived at the 6:30 hour, crowds were scattered about getting ready for the final countdown to ring in 2010 with lesson’s learned and positive energy.
The Hardrock Café hosted the Fallsview Ave. street party with live bands and heated tents, Queen Victoria Park led the way to host the headliners Centre Stage of Moeraes Fate, Glass Tiger and Styx and the Festival of Lights display.
IMG_9547IMG_9552IMG_9554IMG_9544IMG_9562lightened outside
We didn’t stay long enough into the night to see Styx performance with feeling the temperature dropping and light snow showers continued, we left after Glass Tiger’s tribute to our fallen soldiers.
I wanted to write a review on the band that blew me away the most on New Year’s Eve but I couldn’t have expressed it better then the review I read in Garage Band.
Moeraes Fate (Formerly known as Dame) was the first to get the party started, and what I watched and heard took my senses by total surprise. When you first hear a band opening, Darryl from Rock 95 said it best on the waves the other day, sometimes you’re not sure how to react, if you really like the sound or performance but sometimes they blow you away and you know they’re going places.~
With tunes like “No Son of Mine”, “2012”, “Intervention” to name a few gives new meaning to Lady Rock!
CBC’s The Hour and our boyfriend George Stroumboulopoulos, veteran producer, songwriter, and musician Greg Godovitz and Bob Donovan of indieintune.com are just a few mentioned with their outstanding recommendations for their future in the music industry.
With the ladies influences named as Led Zeppelin, Tools, and the Beatles with the sound of Alice in Chains, Audioslave, The Deftones, Ali Stead on Lead Guitar, Kayla Faye on Drums and Katie Lee, Lead Vocalist and Bass rocked my world, as their sound and the help of the big screen brought their performance closer while feeling my heart beat to the sound and the energy they drew from 2009 to pay if forward into 2010.
Moeraes Fate (formaly Dame) Live on Stage New Year's Eve 2009-10

Moeraes Fate (formaly Dame) Live on Stage New Year's Eve 2009-10

In a very touching moment they gave an outstanding performance to “Man in the Mirror” showed great respect for the end of the year with the loss of a beloved late music icon, Michael Jackson. A song always worth remembering, a song that changed my outlook in life only a short few years back.
Check out Moeraes Fate tribute to the late Jimi Hendrix on their MySpace page.
When we left downtown to make our way home and catch the last hour of the Niagara Festival on Global with our wine to toast and my computer to immediately Facebook this band’s MySpace page with this update “Great night down at the Falls, Moeraes Fate ROCKED the stage! Left at 10 to get home in time to watch the last hour on the tube with bottle of wine and Rockin and Rollin into 2010, Listening to Classic Hits with “September” as Number 1 for the 70’s era by Earth, Wind and Fire !!”
On New Year’s Day I went to Moeraes Fate MySpace page and Bio and was again blown away at the reviews and accomplishments they’ve achieved but the one that took me over the edge, all three of these young ladies are under the age of 18!
I immediately added them to my own MySpace growing list and posted this comment on their wall “The Real Girls Gone Wild!!–Thank you for that Awesome performance and great feeling of Karma you pulled out of 2009 and fed into our 2010, my readers are going to enjoy the experience I write adding this band to the list of the best new experience of 2009.
Rock On Girls! ..m/”
Moeraes Fate (formerly known as Dame) dates back with a growing list of accomplishments since 2006 and its logic to say these stars shined bright on a cold snowy winter night where Fate is the word for 2010

The Moirae or Moerae (in Greek Μοῖραι – the "apportioners", often called the The Fates), in Greek mythology, were the white-robed personifications of destiny (Roman equivalent: Parcae, euphemistically the "sparing ones", or Fata; also equivalent to the Germanic Norns). Their number became fixed at three. (source: Parcae)

The MOERAE are the three sisters who decide on human fate: Clotho, Lachesis, and Atropus. They sing in unison with the music of the SIRENS, or so it is said. Lachesis sings of the things that were, Clotho of those that are, and Atropus about the things that will be. They are most honored among the gods because they distribute justly, and have a share in every home. They give men at their birth their share of evil and good, and they punish the transgressions of both men and of gods. Atropus is said to be the eldest, the best and the shortest of the sisters; Clotho is the 'spinner', and Lachesis the apportioner of lots. It has also been claimed that Tyche (Fortune) was one of the MOERAE, and the most powerful of the sisters because beauty, virtue, and good Fame are in her keeping, and also because she finds pleasure in dashing immoderate hopes.(source: http://homepage.mac.com/cparada/GML/MOERAE.html)

Zeus and the Moirae

Even the gods feared the Moirae. Zeus also was subject to their power, the Pythian priestess at Delphi once admitted. Hesiod referred to "the Moirai to whom wise Zeus gave the greatest honour",[1] though no classic writing clarifies as to what exact extent the lives of immortals were impacted by the whims of the Fates themselves, and it is to be expected that the relationship of Zeus and the Moirae was not immutable over the centuries.
A supposed epithet Zeus Moiragetes, meaning "Zeus Leader of the Moirae" was inferred by Pausanias from an inscription he saw in the second century AD at Olympia: "As you go to the starting-point for the chariot-race there is an altar with an inscription to the Bringer of Fate.[2] This is plainly a surname of Zeus, who knows the affairs of men, all that the Fates give them, and all that is not destined for them."[3] At the Temple of Zeus at Megara, Pausanias inferred from the relief sculptures he saw "Above the head of Zeus are the Horai and Moirae, and all may see that he is the only god obeyed by Moira." Pausanias' inferred assertion is unsupported in cult practice, though he noted a sanctuary of the Moirae there at Olympia (v.15.4), and also at Corinth (ii.4.7) and Sparta (iii.11.8), and adjoining the sanctuary of Themis outside a city gate of Thebes[4] (source : Wikipeida)

We are numb. The world has lost one of the Great Ones, Haydain Neale who passed away Sunday November 22 2009.

Haydain Neale was our producer/manager/teacher/mentor when we started out as Dame, until his motor vehicle accident in Aug 2007.
He passed away from lung cancer on Sunday. That man didn't smoke a day in his life. Was so 'into' his health. He was the most awesome human being ever. Even if he didn't know you he would make you feel special.  A great loss, a lot of grieving right now.

Check out his new song, Lonesome Highway. He finally overcame the 3 month coma and rehabilitation from his injuries from Aug 2007.
His 1st album since the accident is set to be released Dec 1 2009. The song is about the accident and his journey. Haydain is the single soul who took us as very young musicians and taught us songwriting and about the industry for 2 years.
He was the President of The Songwriters Association of Canada at the time of his accident and a multi Juno Award winner.

Our hearts go out to his dedicated and beautiful wife Michaela and his darling daughter, the pride of his eye, Yas

His struggle is over. We are at a loss.

Crushed. Katee and Kayla

Moeraes Fate: new name, new album, new attitude
Written by Lia Karidas    Tuesday, 20 October 2009

Moeraes Fate.jpg

I recently spoke with Katee Lee, lead singer and bassist for Moeraes Fate, the three-piece rock trio formerly known as Dame. Keep reading for more insight on the name change, new guitarist, Ali Stead, and the band's upcoming album.
"There were more than two other bands called Dame," explained Katee when I asked about the band's much talked about name change- only one of many changes that the band has undergone.
So, why Moeraes Fate?
Katee explained that , "a 'dame' is a woman knighted, so with Dame we wanted to show that we were independent women. The Moeraes were the daughters of Zeus- goddesses. With the name change we wanted to show that we've matured since we started the band."
From dames to goddesses, the young women that make up the band have worked very hard over the last few years, and have developed one of the most loyal indie fanbases in Ontario.
Aside from maturation, Moeraes Fate also saw change with their new guitarist, Ali Stead. When asked about Ali, Katee says, "She is the perfect fit. We all have very relaxed, laid back personalities, and they go together really well. She brings a great energy to our live performances."
"Making of the New Me", Moeraes Fate's upcoming album, will be available in mid-November. Says Katee of the album, "It has a more mature sound. A lot less pop-y than we were before." Until then, make sure to check out their new MySpace www.myspace.com/moeraesfateband , for other news and updates.

ALLISON_CAROLINE_SMITH_SEP_20_STEAM_PUNK_SHOOT_WITH_STARKERS_with_nameIn Greek mythology a group of three goddesses known as the Moeraes determined the fate of mankind and the gods, incuding their own.

For the Toronto area band Dame, recently changing their name to Moeraes Fate can thus be seen as a kind of seizing of their own destiny. Recently I had an occasion to chat with the members of the award-winning power trio in the comforts of their loft/rehearsal hall located in a Toronto neighborhood that time has seemingly long forgotten.

I caught them right in the middle of composing their next album. I tried to make the most out of the half-hour they were able to give me. They were gracious but also anxious to get back to composing the new material.  They are enthused with their new name having felt compelled to change it when the meaning of Moeraes in Greek mythology was brought to their attention. The added incentive was the fact that their former name was held by at least eight other bands worldwide.

1moerliveYou can tell that they have thought this out thoroughly merely from the fact that they know of at least eight other bands with the name "Dame"..   "The name Moeraes Fate ties in to us and who we are. You know, there are three of us and we feel powerful together when we play" Says Ali, the guitarist who will be celebrating a full year in the band in January having been discovered off of Youtube in videos which amazed her colleagues in Moeraes Fate. "The name is a celebration of powerful women and as a group of three you can draw parallels. We liked that. Not that we didn't like the name 'Dame' and we actually got a lot of compliments on it but it was clear a change of name was going to help distinguish us beyond what our sound already does" Agrees Katee, the singer/bassist.

The band formerly known as "Dame" was one well known for its efficiency in utilising the internet and its social networking sites to further their cause. One tends to associate youth with naivete and lack of focus but these young women have matured beyond their years in a short time not merely in terms of their musicianship but in how they view the music industry. "Its changed for the worse in my view. Bands used to actually have to be able to play. Now there are all these artificial effects to enhance a singer's voice. I can really hear it when I listen to modern stuff. I am not gonna mention any names but there are a number of vocalists that use...let's say embellishment" says Kayla, the hard-hitting drummer, a disciple of noted percussionist Jeff Salem. I ask her if drum music is not also embellished these days. "Oh absolutely it is. But I notice it more in what they do with singers voices." "We refuse to do anything like that. Our sound has to be real when we record. It has to sound like our live shows. It is one thing we always insist upon" Says Katee.

Each intends to further study aspects of music production and promotion after they graduate 1moeraeshigh school. This is in line with the firm commitment they have made to the industry which they remain critical of. They are serious, firm in the approach they want to take and already have an impressive well of experience to drawn upon.

The band is playing a Christmas special broadcast on Image FM (www.Imagefm.ca) in December and a live concert in Niagara Falls to be broadcast on New Year's Eve on Global television. Tune in to catch the next chapter in the odyssey of these three young rock goddesses.

Moeraes Fate

Recently, I did a photo shoot with the band Moeraes Fate, (formally known as DAME.) I've been holding on to these for the last week or two, waiting for them to announce their new name officially. The theme was Steampunk, which I always have trouble explaining so click on the red link if you are curious about what it is. :)

I brought in two MUAs, Julienne Spencer and Christina R who did a fantastic job on the makeup and hair! And Starkers! Corsetry was very kind to lend us these beautiful corsets and skirts.

Each of the women has their own distinct personality so we tried to reflect that in the wardrobe. Above are Katee (vocals/bass) and Kayla with the goggles (drums). For better quality versions of these images, click on the links. The photo quality on this blog is rubbish!

New band member Ali (guitar), is also new to photo shoots but she's really easy going and a great listener so she photographed like a pro.

The name Moeraes Fate is a play on words. The Moerae (otherwise known as The Fates) were personifications of destiny in Greek mythology. One spins the thread of life, one measures that life and one cuts the thread, i.e. Birth, Life and Death. So when they let me in on the name change they asked if it was possible to work it into the shoot. I came up with some wool and a huge pair of gardening shears (thanks to my Mom) which I think worked well! And I think it's a cool name for a band of three women. Click HERE for better image quality.
And I'm totally chuffed that they decided to use one of the shots on their new CD! I think it looks perfect!
So it was a success in my book!! A definite thanks to my sis Samantha for helping me lug all my gear down to the studio and set up. Great day, great band, great shots!

Up next, I'm doing some model test shots with a new client. And then I'm hoping to put another creative shoot together for November inspired by Helmut Newton and Ellen von Unwerth (if you're on a work computer and they're prudish about nudity maybe visit this site later...).
